I love sugar, probably more than any human being ever should. I eat insane amounts of it every day, and I always have room for more.
You know how once in a while you buy yourself a special treat? Well, I buy or bake a sugary treat for myself almost every single day. This past week alone, I’ve consumed two tubs of ice cream, two boxes of Valentine’s chocolates, donuts, countless cups of tea with lots of sugar, and more.
Though I look relatively healthy, I’m finally starting to recognize I have a problem.
It has taken me a long time to realize that even though I’m happy with how my body looks, I’m hurting it on the inside with my sweet tooth. I have cavities constantly, suffer from blinding headaches, and am constantly battling yeast infection issues (sorry, TMI). I do eat a ton of healthy, vegetable-based dishes, but most of that is cancelled out by my love for cake and croissants.
In all honesty, I’ll never be willing to cut out sugary sweets completely, but I think it’s probably time to cut back... a lot.
My sugar addiction is purely a result of habit and association. For as long as I can remember, my favourite nighttime combo has been tea, treats and TV. I love to come home from a long day of work and cozy up with some cookies in front of a romcom. Though this is a totally reasonable way to spend a night sometimes, every single night certainly isn’t healthy.
With this in mind, I’ve started to seek out alternatives to change my habits.
The way I see it, if I can diverge some of my sugar cravings into my beauty routine, it’s a win-win: I’ll look better and feel better! Instead of eating a slice of cake every day, maybe I can just make myself smell like a cake?
I started acquiring and testing the sugariest products I could find, desperate to satisfy my “there’s always room for dessert” mantra. Here are my absolute favourite products so far.
Lush Bubble Gum Lip Scrub
I’ve sung my praises for this product before, because really, I love it SO much. The scent is almost sickeningly sweet, and if you happen to get a bit of product in your mouth while you exfoliate, it tastes amazing!
I’ve used it every second morning since I got it a few weeks ago and haven’t had had dry, chapped lips since!
Philosophy Pink Frosted Animal Shower Gel and Sweet Creamy Frosting
Nobody does sweet, dessert-y scents quite like Philosophy. Everytime I smell their line at Sephora I sort of go insane. Why does the packaging have cute little recipes on it? How does Cinnamon Buns smell SO MUCH like a fresh batch of cinnamon buns? Seriously, what is this magic?
Pink Frosted Animal Cracker has been on my wish list for a long time, mostly because I totally love the real life sprinkle-covered cookie equivalent (only available in the US, sadly). I also really like that it’s a shower gel and/or bubble bath, so I can actually use it in my tragic, tub-less apartment. The scent is quite similar to the actual cookies (I did a comparison test, of course), and the gel is rich and creamy. I use it in the shower when I’m craving a fun treat, and my skin is left super-soft with a hint of cookie smell.
Sweet Creamy Frosting is a body lotion so sugary and thick, it actually feels like you’re rubbing birthday cake frosting all over your body when you apply it. It leaves my skin feeling super velvety, and it makes me smell like a human cake. It might just be one of my new favourite products ever.
Lush Turkish Delight Shower Smoothie
Turkish delight is one of my favourite special treats; every time I buy a batch from the little shop down the road, I like to pretend I’m in Narnia or somewhere distant and magical like that.
Lush’s shower smoothie hits the nail on the head with the sweet, rosy smell, using rose absolute from a family farm in Turkey with luxurious jasmine and neroli. This scent combo works perfectly with the cocoa butter and almond oil base, and though I’d never used a shower smoothie before this one, I’m totally hooked. This stuff makes your skin baby-butt soft!
• Lush’s Vanilla Dee-Lite is a less icing-y, creamy dreamy alternative to Sweet Creamy Frosting.
• Too Faced’s new Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette not only looks like chocolate, it SMELLS like chocolate!
• Tokyo Milk’s Salted Caramel Lip Elixir has had me craving caramel since the first time I smelled it.
Overall, these products have helped me a lot so far. I’m still eating junk food, but I have made a visible effort to cut down, popping into the shower for some sugary TLC instead of to the corner store. I think I’m making progress…
