Every summer, I swap out my usual potions and creams for something flashy and new. But then I think about how miserable I’d be without a few of my staples, panic, and change my mind.
Hey, I’m a creature of habit. What can I say?
Luckily, the products I just can’t quit happen to be super-affordable and found in most drugstores. Most of my favorites are great year-round, but these three hit the top of my list during summer.
I rub a thick layer of Yes to Cucumbers Natural Sunscreen on my face, neck and décolletage every morning because the last thing I want is gnarly sunburn to put a damper on my summer break. I did enough damage to my skin when I was younger, and the SPF 30 in this is the best at keeping me burn-free year round.
The formula contains 11% zinc oxide, which helps keep my face zit-free, and this is helpful for summer when I prefer to wear less makeup. It’s light enough that I can layer it under makeup for more coverage but thick enough that I can make the best custom tinted moisturizer by mixing it with some BB cream.
Year round, I use this as a morning cleanser and to depuff my tired eyes before I jump in the shower. During the summer, I love to carry a small bottle in my purse or pool bag and spray my neck and face when I’m feeling overheated or uncomfortable. It’s especially helpful when the AC breaks on campus and I’m stuck in a hot classroom for a full day of summer school.
I know that realistically I don’t need to buy water in a can. I can easily get water from the sink or buy a big jug of mineral water for a dollar, but the sink just can’t replicate the can. I also like really frivolous and luxurious things from time to time, and when it comes to unnecessary luxury, the price is definitely right on this one—whew.
My naturally curly hair has never been much of a match for Chicago summers. As soon as I step outside in the morning, my freshly styled hair explodes and quickly goes from smooth and shiny to a frizzy and dull mess. I use OGX Kukui Oil Frizz Defying Curl Cream on my natural curls as well as when I am planning to straighten my hair.
I use a dime-size amount and rub through my ends to my roots, followed by a quick run through of a wide tooth comb while my hair is still wet. While my straightened hair will develop a slight wave with the humidity, the frizziness is kept at bay.
I love that whether I blow dry or air dry, my hair doesn’t feel sticky, crunchy, weighed down, oily, or greasy. I also love the smell, which reminds me of macadamia nut liqueur. SO good.
I think my favorite thing about these products is that they all transfer well to other seasons, so I don’t feel wasteful at the end of summer if I still have some leftover. But let’s not think about the end of summer just yet!
