There's never really been a sweet spot for me when it comes to my skin. Fall, perhaps? Winter brings intense dryness, spring is all about allergy hives, and summer—well, summer is full of pore-clogging smog and melted-makeup sweat, a delicious cocktail that results in swollen, black spots that dot my cheeks, nose and chin. Too cute!
Living in a city means the air is heartily polluted, and the humidity and soaring temperatures means I'm sweaty as all get-out. My hair products like to melt down from my scalp all over my face and combine together with my makeup, sunscreen and the general grime of the air to fill my phone screen with a greyish grime that needs to be thoroughly cleaned away every evening.
I've got sensitive skin, though, so traditional deep-cleaning measures don't always apply. I've managed to find a few different products and tools to keep my skin healthy, clean and happy each night so that it can breathe and repair itself even in the sticky summer heat.
My first defense is the Binchotan Facial Puff. Konjac sponges have been heavily hyped for the last while and with good reason. They gently yet thoroughly buff skin to its smoothest, cleanest perfection, leaving it feeling clean and rejuvenated with each use.
This guy, infused with antibacterial and brightening charcoal, can be used on its own with warm water, or with a gentle cleanser (my method) to foam and buff away dirt and grime.
Once I've cleansed, I apply Drunk Elephant's TLC Framboos Glycolic Serum, a product Victoria also hailed in her recent skincare breakdown (which, to be fair, I recommended to her). I am cuckoo over this serum, though; it packs a punch without any burning or stinging and truly brings its A-game when it comes to exfoliation and healing, promoting cell turnover at hyper speed.
How? Glycolic, lactic, salicylic, tartaric and citric acids all work harmoniously to shed dead skin cells and brighten and even the ones left behind, while white tea and horse chestnut make sure everything is kept calm and soothed. My sensitive skin approves, but I usually only use the serum every other night.
My final secret weapon is my beloved Indie Lee Blemish Stick. Portable and gentle, this guy can be used before bed or throughout the day to give existing blemishes a nudge goodbye.
It's watery, which I prefer over typical daytime treatment gels, and it's formulated with salicylic and glycolic acid, witch hazel and camphor (which is soothing). The salicylic helps to dry out pimples while the glycolic helps to heal and brighten any acne spots left behind.
I also love that this can be applied over or under makeup, meaning you can use it a few times a day and feel confident that zits will shrink and disappear within 24 hours.
Thanks to these products, I feel like I'm confidently surviving the strange skin climate that is summer in the city.
