When someone says the phrase “ life imitating art,” I always assume they’re talking about how they spent the weekend practicing The Little Mermaid's iconic hair flip; the only thing more real than that scene is the fact that I have spent numerous hours reenacting that scene every time I’m in, near, or around any body of water.
I mean how great was Ariel? SO great, is that answer. So to further imitate the influential red-headed daughter of King Triton, I’m getting on board with seaweed beauty products. Life imitating cARToons, is more like it.
Seaweed is the super-food of the sea. It has a chemical composition that is so close to human blood plasma that it boasts cell-regulating and restoration components, it’s a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and chock full of trace minerals. It’s no wonder cosmetic companies are incorporating marine plant life into skincare products.
It’s just like Sebastian told Ariel:
Here are three seaweed products I’ve incorporated into my day and night routine.
Skin Actives Collagen Serum, $14
This is my morning product. After I wash my face, I apply two to three pumps of the Collagen Serum to my clean, dry skin. I spread the serum around my face in upwards circles with my finger tips, just enough so I have a thin layer of coverage; a little goes a long way.
The serum has a pretty slippery texture, but it’s quite light and absorbs very easily. What I love is that the second ingredient in this product is lactobacillus/kelp ferment filtrate, which is the fermentation process of sea kelp. This process aids in creating a concentration of nutrients. Gimme those nutrients!
Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Lotion, $15
This toner is so fresh, like many of the Mario Badescu products I've tried. It feels cleansing and hydrating, and not all at drying. My skin feels like it just drank some refreshing spring water rather than being stripped of moisture and sucked dry like some vampire toners tend to leave my skin.
One Love Organics Youth Preservation Serum, $75
This serum ain’t no guppy. It has presence and staying power, so I reserve it for nighttime routine as a regenerative moisturizing serum. After using the Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Lotion to tone, I use about three pumps of the Youth Preservation Serum and apply it all over my face and neck.
This serum has both algae and blue sea kale, which has a great amount of fatty acids, vitamin C, and iodine for all your plumping and skin health needs. It feels slippery and decadent, like wearing shiny, silk pajamas on your face, and it smells both reinvigorating and sensual with a mixture of citrus and floral components. My skin looks and feels more even-toned and refreshed in the morning.
Short of combing my hair with a dinglehopper, I think I’m really nailing this mermaid skincare regimen.
