Cellulite appears on the legs and booty of women of all shapes and sizes, mine being one of them. Luckily, I don’t obsess over my looks too much. I have reached a point in my life where I am comfortable in my own skin, even if it showing cellulite.
The skin is made up of layers. The dermis is the deep under layer where collagen and elastin are located, holding skin in its place and allowing it to stretch. The epidermis is made up of cells that are either dead (at the very top) or dying, where they mingle with melanin in the basal layer.
As we age, collagen and elastin break down, but they are still attached from the papillary layer of the dermis (the outermost layer) to the subcutaneous tissue (the innermost layer). These connections create dimples in the outer layer of the skin, and cellulite appears.
Short of temporarily filling in the adipose layer with additional collagen, there is really no way to permanently reduce the appearance of these dimples in the skin. BUT THERE IS HOPE! Dehydrated skin is thinner, and the dimples will appear more pronounced, so increasing circulation and slightly swelling the skin are known to reduce the appearance of cellulite, and healthy, moisturized skin will retain the water needed to maintain supple, swollen, skin. One technique that I employ in my pre-shower regimen to try and reduce the appearance of cellulite is dry brushing.
While I love a good, hard scrub down and exfoliate at least every other shower, the daily exfoliation provided by dry brushing is just right to keep the cellulite at bay for about 24 hours. I like to use soft natural bristles and spend about three minutes scrubbing towards the heart before a shower.
There are a few lovely benefits to using this method in addition to a cellulite bandaid. Dry skin brushing obviously exfoliates the skin, and like I said a few paragraphs ago, the outermost layer of the skin is made up of dead cells. Helping these cells renew themselves faster promotes an even skin tone, as there will not be any buildup of dead cells to dull the view of your melanin.
Improved circulation is another wonderful reason to start incorporating this into your routine. When you stimulate your skin, your body’s largest organ, you activate circulation and oxygenation, helping new cells form, carting nutrients and oxygen into cells and toxins and waste out.
Following this technique with a shower and letting your moisturizer fully absorb into the skin afterward will seal the deal as well as the moisture into your skin. If you don’t have problems with acne or ingrown hairs, use coconut oil; if you have more issues with dryness, use a butter like shea, cocoa or mango in addition to an oil to up the ante.
For sebaceous ladies like myself, olive with a hint of argan seems to work best, and I think stays shiny the longest. Always try to give your moisturizer of choice at least 15 minutes to absorb completely. I consider this the most glamorous part of my routine, applying perfumes while oily in a kimono. (This seems to be a common thread amongst us xoVain ladies.)
