My New And Improved Skincare Routine Is Actually Giving Me New And Improved Skin

I’ve gone from using two products to using nine, and it’s really starting to show.

I really need to stop repeating how much everything about my beauty routine has changed since I started writing for xoVain, but I just can’t help it. Everything has changed SO much! And that includes, of course, my skincare routine--and actual skin.

Back in simpler times, I used whatever moisturizer I felt intrigued by/could afford at the time (mostly Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion), and Cetaphil to cleanse and take off my makeup (though I seldom actually did this routinely). My skin was alright, but I never really gave it any extra love, and in turn, it was just sort of there

I had oily patches, dry bits, and lots of annoying little breakouts, but I figured that was just the nature of my skin, and generally left it alone.

My current skin situation. Other than the blemishes on my cheeks, I think it’s looking pretty soft and glowy!

But now, as I’ve said before, everything is different. For one, I have an incredible facialist who has taught me all sorts of wonderful skin-related things. Julie from Province Apothecary’s seemingly endless wealth of wisdom has helped me take my skincare routine up a notch (or ten), and I’m working on improvements I didn’t even know were possible, like fading my acne scars and speeding healing.

I also have access to way more products, and I’m constantly reading up on what other people are adding to their routine, so that helps too.

With all these new influences, I’ve seriously bulked up my skincare lineup , and I’m loving the results! Here’s what’s been working for me so far.

Cleansers & Toners

I didn’t mean to acquire so many cleansing products, but I’m happy I did.

I use my Fresh Rose Cleansing Foam every morning. The smell wakes me up and gets me excited to get going, and the formula works as a toner too, so my skin is left feeling more even for the new day. Plus, there’s just something so nice about a really foamy, light cleanser (even if it’s overpriced and I probably won’t be able to buy it again).

Every night, I use my Province Apothecary Moisturizing Cleanser and Makeup Remover. I gently massage my face with it for at least 30 seconds, as Julie instructed, to stimulate my skin cells and help with the regeneration process. This is my first-ever oil-based cleanser, and I love how soft and hydrated it makes my skin feel. It’s also nice not to have to use a separate eye-makeup remover!

When I’m finished massaging, I lather up my face with Paul & Joe’s Creamy Facial Cleansing Foam. I actually bought this cleanser only because it came with one of my new makeup bags, but I’m so happy with it! The texture is super-rich and creamy, and it has a refreshing sweet orange blossom scent to it.

When I’m fully lathered, I thoroughly rinse with a warm, clean washcloth, and I’m ready for the moisture faze!

Honorable mention: Comodynes makeup wipes for lazy nights.

Moisturizers & Serums

I had never even heard of skin serums until recently, and I had also never moisturized my skin at night. I know, right? Where have I been?

I use my Mario Badescu Oil-Free Moisturizer with SPF every morning because it’s so lightweight and interacts well with makeup. It’s one of the silkiest moisturizers I’ve ever tried, and I really do love it.

At night, I used my custom-made Province Apothecary face serum. A special blend of essential oils, Julie made this serum for me when I went for my first facial. I massage it into my skin each night with a touch of water on my hands for even distribution, and the results have been incredible. I wake up with the softest, healthiest-feeling skin, and the smell is so relaxing it sends me right to sleep!

Spot Treatments

I’ve always had an issue with single, big-pimple breakouts, so I’m not sure why I didn’t own any spot treatments for so long. Duh.

When I have a particularly big, achy pimple (like the cell-phone-induced ones on my cheeks), I use Philosophy’s Clear Days Ahead spot treatment. Made with salicylic acid, this stuff dries out my big, painful pimples in no time.

When I have a small blemish, or I’m trying to speed-heal or fade my scars, I apply Province Apothecary’s Clear Skin spot treatment. A powerful blend of pure essential oils, this product works great on inflammation and bothersome below-the-skin pimples.

Special Stuff

We’ve already been over this, but I couldn’t leave them out now could I?

Once every week, I treat myself to a night of extra skin TLC with some exfoliation and a clay face mask. You can read all about how much I love them right here.

So, tell me: what am I missing? Are there products and steps I should add?
