Could a Pokemon Bath Bomb Get Jell-O Out of a Synchronized Swimmer's Hair?

This and other questions go pretty much unanswered in this week's beauty news

I feel like Billy Crystal returning to host the Oscars right now. Should I sing something? Maybe put on a tux? Not that you guys would be able to see either of those things, which is probably for the best considering I look haggard from an overnight trip I took to Cincinnati (which I still can't spell right on the first try).

I'd never been to Cincinnati (still can't spell it right on the second try either), so I was excited to check out P&G headquarters with about a dozen other beauty editors (folks from Allure, Real Simple, Shape, etc.) on Monday and Tuesday. I can't tell you about the awesome new product they're launching in January just yet — it's basically the beauty equivalent of a matter of national security — but I can tell you that the P&G archives are fascinating

I got to see the original packaging of products that have been around for decades (if not more than a century, like Ivory soap), products that are no longer on the market (like Drene shampoo), and vintage bottles of products that were sold under different names outside of the US.

But this the news, not the olds! Let's talk about what's been going on in beauty this past week.

Urban Decay is getting Naked again

Urban Decay Naked 173.6 is coming! OK, so it's really only their, like, seventh Naked palette, but even so, that's enough to make anyone wonder, Are there really any other neutral colors?

Well, yes and no. Sure, the colors are slightly different than past Naked shades, but what really sets them apart from previous Naked palettes is that they're all matte (OK, and one demi-matte).

The square of non-shimmery shades comes as a response to people who wouldn't shut up about wanting non-shimmery shades. Squeaky wheel and all.

There's always room for J-E-L-L-O in synchronized swimmers' hair

Actually, it's K-N-O-X, Knox, an unflavored culinary gelatin — sorry, gelatine — that the synchronized swimmers of the US Olympic team use as part of their pre-pool beauty routine.

“We don’t wear swim caps," Anita Alvarez and Mariya Koroleva (pictured at the top of the page) told Vogue when asked about their waterproof beauty regimen. (Well, presumably either Alvarez or Koroleva said that, but Vogue didn't indicate which.) "When we compete, we put Knox gelatin in our hair. It’s like unflavored Jell-O — we mix it with water, and it turns into a gooey mixture. You comb or brush that into your hair, put it up in a bun, and put a headpiece over that, so when it dries, it gets really hard and your hair doesn’t fall out when you swim. We like to add glitter and other decorations to it — it’s easy.”

Yeah, but is it easy to get out? That's what I wanna know.

Take a break from Pokemon Go with this highly appropriate bath bomb

I had a total "Why didn't I think of that?" moment when I saw this: a bath bomb that looks just like a Pokeball, which, admittedly, is a thing of which I did not know the name and had to ask Caitlin. I guess that's why I didn't think of that.

Anyway, looky!

I have no idea why Pearl Bath Bombs puts a Kinder Surprise-esque ring in the middle of each one. (Are rings a Pokemon thing? I forgot to ask Caitlin.) But I imagine this would make a great gift for someone who loves both Pokemon and bathing. And rings. (Apparently, a handful of the rings put in these bath bombs are worth up to $5,000. What?!)

Some of the most amazing makeovers aren't necessarily "beautiful"

Another thing I never got into: Arrested Development. (I don't know why — I love so many of the cast members.) But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate this jaw-dropping Buster Bluth makeup transformation done by vlogger Kiki G.

If I hadn't watched it from beginning to end, I don't know if I'd believe that was the same person.

  • Which TV character would you make yourself over to look like if you had the superskills?
  • Are you into Pokemon Go? I heard there are as many registered users on it as there are on Twitter!
  • How do you think the swimmers get gelatin out of their hair?
  • Are you gonna get the new Naked palette?
  • By the way, I know you guys are wondering about why original content is down and syndicated content is up. I'll give you more info on Friday, but I'm just asking you to hang in there for the time being — and thank you for doing so!
