Ah, the Fourth of July! It's the day in which Americans like me (and most of you, based on Google Analytics) celebrate the Declaration of Independence, formally proclaiming our nation's independence from Great Britain. But even though Brits have since become our besties—and makers of some of our favorite beauty products—they didn't immediately get the breakup memo that 1776 day.
Have you ever heard of Sybil Ludington? She basically did the same thing Paul Revere did—rode on horseback to warn people that the British were coming—except in 1777 (two years after Revere, because shit was still going down), at only 16 years old (24 years younger than Revere), twice the distance of Revere, and with a vagina. Which, sadly, might be why fewer people have heard of her amazing contribution to America's independence.
And while the ghost of Sybil Ludington rides 40 miles through New York State knocking out rape-y highway men with a stick, I'm over here still trying to figure out how to do a decent blowout on myself. Self-high-five.
What I'm trying and pretty much completely failing to say is that independence has many meanings and applications, and beauty is one of them. I am still completely reliant upon professionals for a great blowout. And, like MAC has clearly noticed by offering à la carte services like cat eyes and contouring at their new studio, many of us just haven't figured out how to do certain skills very well on our own. At least not yet.
Only two years ago, I was asking Annie to glue false lashes on my eyelids in the old XO office. I've gotten better at it since then, but I still don't feel super-confident doing it myself. I do finally feel like a capital-I capital-W Independent Woman when it comes to using a curling wand, but I'll still take advantage of a more talented friend's skills when they're available.
So this Independence Day, I shamelessly take this loosely related concept and ask you:
- With what beauty skills have you gone from reliant to independent?
- What do you still need to work on?
- Are you going to wear patriotic makeup this weekend?
- Also: beauty stream of consciousness: GO!
