Finding the right shade can be a challenge when "nude" means a million different things.

Finding the perfect nude lipstick can be quite the hassle, and after years of searching (seriously, years) I realized that the reason I hadn’t found my perfect shade was because what I was really looking for was something that mimicked the natural hue of my lips. Even still, finding shades that suit my skin tone (which can vary in darkness depending on the season) proved to be a difficult task.

After much searching, here are five of my tried-and-true "your lips but better" picks ranging from slight pink to pink-brown.

Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Bois De Rose

Estee Lauder Bois de Rose

Bois De Rose

This lipstick leans a touch warm on me, but I love it for completing softer looks. It has a nice creamy feel to it and stays pretty well throughout the day with a few touch ups here and there. The one thing I don’t like about it, though, is that it has a very distinct “lipstick” smell to it.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Pretty Natural

Milani Pretty Natural

Pretty Natural

This shade reads a bit more on the soft pink side in photos but is a great complement to most looks. The formula is very creamy and opaque, and it holds up well all day. The scent, again, is not one of my favorites. The original Milani Color Statement lipsticks all have a fake watermelon candy smell to them (the new mattes smell more like vanilla). It’s tolerable to me, but if you are sensitive to scent I would skip it.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color in Touch of Spice

Maybelline Touch of Spice

Touch of Spice

A bit more on the mauve side, this lipstick is my favorite your-lips-but-better shade in the fall. The formula of the Maybelline Mattes are super-comfortable on the lips, long-lasting, and very opaque. When I’m on the lighter end of my shade spectrum, Touch of Spice reads a bit browner on me.

MAC Lipstick in Twig

MAC Twig

Twig

This has been one of my favorite shades for a while as it kind of teeters on the edge of the nude/your-lips-but-better spectrum depending on how dark my skin is. It is a satin formula, so it’s ultra-creamy and opaque, and it wears comfortably on the lips for quite a while.

Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Sheer Rapture

UD Sheer Revolution Rapture

Sheer Rapture

How do I love thee, let me count the ways… Sheer Rapture is one of my favorite lipsticks of all time. Period. I can’t get enough of the Sheer Revolution formula to begin with (smooth, hydrating, buildable coverage) and this color is just the perfect dusty rose shade. I wear this anytime I’m not wearing a bold lip (so often that it’s only taken me four months to nearly finish the tube).
