Though often overlooked, highlighters and otherwise shimmery products are among my "can't live without it" daily products. It's such an easy and subtle way to make your face reach that much-sought-after glowing goddess status.
This is easier to achieve in the summer, no doubt, when you're kissed by the sun and slightly dewy from the warmth. Come winter, though, skin can become more lackluster. This ought to be combatted with regular exfoliation to nix dead, dry skin, as well as a moisturizer to plump and nourish. But don't you dare forget about your shimmery products.
These are my top five at the moment, and each serves its own role.
MAC Pigment in Vanilla
I used to find loose pigments intimidating, but I started off easy with MAC Vanilla, a creamy, slightly off-white shimmer that's super-fine (in all the senses). It's extraordinarily subtle on my skin in particular since I am near-translucent, which is why I reach for it so often.
I just apply it with my fingers anywhere I want a little shimmer—typically on my cheekbones or nose bridge. Sometimes I apply it on top of lip gloss, as well, just for kicks.
Vincent Longo Flora Highlighter
This is a pink, fine highlighter by Vincent Longo that adds some serious etherealness. As you can see, it's a mixture of creamy white and pink, which creates more of a warm glow than a straight white highlighter would. Because it's a powder, it sits gently on top of the skin and is pretty easy to manipulate.
Make Up For Ever Uplight in 32
So we've got a loose pigment, a pressed shimmer, and now for the gel! This luminizer by Make Up For Ever is probably the most dramatic of all of these. It's a mix between a pink and beige, and it has noticeable glitter in it. It's not like '90s glitter, though -- more like flat, iridescent glitter that catches the light every once in a while.
I like the gel form, and find that it sits well on top of blush, too. It's technically discontinued (MUFE has since switched to only powder lumizers), which is a bummer, but you can still find these online on the cheap.
Napoleon Perdis Champagne Days
This came with the Napoleon Perdis Slim Aarons set, and it's one of the best creamy stick highlighters I've found. Like the highlighter above, it floats around the Internet, but isn't in production anymore (don't hate me...). It's a thick cream that blends seamlessly into the skin and adds a champagne golden glow wherever you put it.
I prefer the gold cream highlighter when I'm wearing a deep red lipstick or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, a nude.
Aquarian Soul Sunstone & Citrine Radiance Oil
Finally, let's talk about all-over shimmer. I am not a fan of the super-obvious "I'm wearing shimmer!" look, and instead prefer something that's more or less undetectable.
I've found a winner in Aquarian Soul's Radiance Oil, which uses actual powdered sandstone (that pretty, mesmerizing sparkly stone) and citrine. The effect is so heavenly!
In the bottle it looks too shimmery, but once on, it's perfect. You're not going to catch the light everywhere you go, but instead will just look... glowy.
