The ladies of xoVain can rock a bold lip like it's their job, because technically it IS their job. (I'm looking at you, Marci!)
A few months ago, I decided to switch it up and explore the world of purple lipsticks, starting with MAC Lipstick in Heroine and Too Faced Melted Liquified Longwear Lipstick in Melted Violet.
I’m not going to lie to you guys, when I first saw MAC Heroine lipstick--seductively beckoning from across the makeup counter--my reaction was “I couldn’t possibly! [clutches pearls].”
But the more I glanced at this deep purple shade, the more I gravitated toward it. So I looked to my friend, Dylan, and asked, "Can I pull off this purple?" and she responded, "Oh my God, yes, put it on your face right now!" Of course I obliged and totally loved it.
Here’s what you need to know about this tawdry little temptress of a lipstick: it's matte, creamy, easy to apply, and it stays put all day long. I will say it can be a bit drying, but it doesn't fade--even after meals. Like most MAC lipsticks, Heroine has a slight vanilla scent, which I LOVE. The shade reads differently depending on the light, but the overall tone is a deep red-purple. In fluorescent and outdoor lighting it's a bit cooler, and in soft or dim light it's almost pinky-purple.
As much as I love Heroine, I think I love Too Faced's Melted Violet, which is on the other end of the color spectrum, even more. If Heroine is Buffy Summers, vampire slayer, Melted Violet is Willow Rosenberg, Buffy's dutiful sidekick. But she's still a force to be reckoned with.
Too Faced describes the lipstick as having “the staying power of a stain, the intense color of a liquid lipstick, and the high shine of a gloss,” and I would agree with the first two claims, but not the last. It's more satiny than glossy, and it dries into a soft, creamy matte.
Again, the slightly dry nature of this product aids in its longevity, but unlike Heroine, it does transfer a bit. Luckily it also has a soft "precision" applicator that gives very even distribution for reapplication.
The big draw for me on this liquid lipstick is its powerful pigmentation. I swatched just one swipe and the color came through super-rich and violet (only slightly radioactive).
If these purple lip colors are too... purple for you, start with a sheer formula like NYX Butter Gloss in Raspberry Tart. It has enough pigment to give you a pop of purple without being loud.
Another option is to mix purple with another color. My favorite pairings include Heroine with MAC Flat Out Fabulous (double the matte, double the fun!) and Melted Violet with Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Lovesick (for a radiant, orchid effect).
Something as simple as blotting after application and swiping on lip balm can also tone down purple. But at the end of the day, you just have to own it. Slap that color on and walk tall. You've got this!
Are you ready to take the purple plunge? Have you already gone there? If the latter, pics, please!
