A puppy-eye within a cat-eye--two animal eyes, one look.

Are you ever dead set against wearing a certain makeup style, but find yourself willing to try it out one more time after seeing it look flawless on someone else? Then, after finishing that final flick, you promise yourself to never try it again because you were right the first time?

That’s me and the cat-eye. Except my beauty promises usually mean nothing and I find myself repeating this pattern over and over again.

Makeup-wise, there are a couple of things I hate on myself. The aforementioned cat-eye is the first, the second is colorful eye shadow. Why I’m combining these two things on myself today, I’m not sure. Here’s how to do it...

blue cosmetics

Take any colored eyeliner (gel works best, in my opinion) and trace around the outer two-thirds of your eye.

The shape you want to do is similar to the puppy-eye. You don’t have to be neat at this point, because black liner will be going around it. I used a mixture of Lush Emotional Brilliance Liquid Eyeliner in Control and the blue gel liner in my Sephora Makeup Academy Palette.

To amp it up even more, apply a colored mascara. I used Hard Candy Ginormous Mascara in Electric Blue.

An eye within an eye within an eye.

An eye within an eye within an eye.

Using black liquid liner, draw a cat-eye shape outside of the blue liner. Then go in with some black gel liner on top, to really darken things up.

I like to complement this eye look with strong brows, so I filled mine in with Crave (a matte darkest brown/black) from the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette.

The rest of my face was left mostly bare, save for concealer and powder where necessary. I finished things off with some clear lip gloss.

Honestly, I’m not into this on me (It’s a cat-eye, Mari, when will you learn?) but I do think it’s an interesting way to make the eyes appear larger. It could also be fun with other accent colors instead of blue.

  • Do you live in the cat-eye, or do you hate it on yourself like I do?
  • Is there a makeup look you keep coming back to, even though you know it won't end well?
