Eyebrows are very expressive and personal things. How I fill in my brows is hugely influenced by my well-being, and a "power brow" is helping lift me out of a recent slump. In fact, after I was playing around with my brows for this post, my boyfriend complained that he couldn’t read my mood... which is kind of what I was going for.
Conventional brow advice for a brunette is to fill them in with a colour one to two shades lighter than your hair. I do this most of the time. It makes for soft, light and natural brows that no one would take a second glance at. They’re understated and unobtrusive.
I don’t know if I’m reading too much into it by making this a feminist thing, but those seem to be characteristics society likes in women, too.
I’m usually afraid of making my eyebrows too extreme, but you’ve got to wonder what “too extreme” really means. After years of plucking and waxing my eyebrows, they’re a lot narrower than their natural form. I’ve spent so much time cultivating them to be subtle and delicate, but if I fill them in based on where my hairs grow naturally, the result is kind of the opposite.
I’ve been using a deep-brown pencil that leans towards black rather than the red-brown thing that most brow products seem to have going on, and starting them a little further in than usual to compensate for what has been lost through overzealous plucking. These eyebrows are the brows of the badass goth girl I wanted to be when I was a teenager, but was too afraid and cash-strapped to be.
While writing this, I worried I was bordering on "scouse brow," but then I remembered I do what I want, and I don’t always want to imitate hairs with fine strokes of pencil. Sometimes I just want to go bold, and dramatic, and dominant, and masculine. Interesting eyebrows aren’t anything new here—in fact, by xoVain standards, this power brow is downright boring.
And I really do think that having fierce brows makes you feel a little more powerful. What I thought would make me feel self-conscious actually boosts my confidence. I feel like the brows can help carry a brighter lip or smokier eye than usual. While I won’t wear a heavy brow every day, I’ll definitely be wearing them on days I want to feel strong and powerful.
