This winter I’ve been really into the way a matte, simple face looks with a bold, shellacked and glossy lip. There’s something very sexy and snobby about glossy lips, and that’s the look I want all the time in 2015. In the new year, disco is back in a big way so it’s time to embrace all the glitter, sparkle, spackle and shine you might have feared in years past.
Lip gloss in this The Year of Our Lord Kardashian has come a long way from the sticky, gloppy formulas of yore. When I’m lip gloss shopping, I want a formula that’s smooth, non-stick, moisturizing, and packed with color. Here are some of the best glossies I’ve tried in the past few years.
The “Girl Next Door” Pink
I usually try to avoid looks that could land me in the realm of “adorable,” since I’m often still trying to look older than I am and the dimples don’t help. But sometimes you just have to up your sweetness factor, you know? I keep this Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer on deck for situations requiring optimal cuteness.
It’s softer than a harsh pastel pink, but still falls definitively in the realm of “baby doll.” It goes on smooth and opaque with a soft, satiny sheen. The color will solidly last you for a few hours, eventually fading into a soft stain.
The Disco Fever Berry
Ever since I saw American Hustle last holiday season, I’ve been on the hunt for a few things: more sparkly, low-cut gowns, BIG hair, and the perfect berry-hued lip gloss. The past year has been an exercise in glamour if nothing else, and lo and behold, I’ve finally found my Holy Grail Sex Bob-omb gloss in Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Trompe L’Oeil.
Dior’s lip glosses are truly heavenly. They go on shiny, slick, and sleek without any of that hair-sticking anxiety. Trompre L’Oeil gives you a perfectly pigmented wash of that ideal pink/purple berry tint that’s sure to last you all night as you disco your life away.
The Glamorous Showgirl Red
When I find myself in times of trouble, red lipstick comes to me. Nothing cheers this lady up quite like a good red, but in these trying and drying winter months, matte lips stress me out. That’s why I turn to a good glossy, moisturizing red like POP Beauty Aqua Lacquer in Splashing Scarlet.
Splashing Scarlet is a sheer, bright red. Thick, but never gloppy, the small tube has a tiny brush that makes application a breeze. Infused with vitamin E and joboba oil, this gloss nourishes your lips while amping up your look.
