I have a soft spot for mini makeup products, as evidenced by my excitement whenever a brand releases a new kit of deluxe sample-sized items. (I’m looking at you, Benefit.)
But there’s nothing more useful than a mini mascara, which is probably my number-two makeup product after lipstick. It has the advantage over full-size mascara for a bunch of reasons.
I can get through a mini mascara before it expires.
You know how you’re meant to throw out your mascara every three months? Well, that’s what I thought until I looked closely at my mascara tubes and realised they all have the little 6M logo on them. Either way, even with pretty much daily use, it takes me longer than six months to truly use up a full mascara. And let me tell you, I’m loath to throw something away if it still has usable product in it. I mean, it might be riddled with eye bacteria, but it’s still got some left!
Mini mascaras have the same brushes as their full-size equivalent.
Is there any form of makeup applicator with more unnecessary variety than the mascara wand? After a while, though, people find a favourite and will want to stick with it. The plastic brush is a big selling point of the Benefit They’re Real mascara, and divisive as it may be, I’m a big fan. Luckily the little tubes have an identical brush.
Side-note: It seems like mini mascaras have all the benefits and none of the downsides of unique wands or brushes. Take L’Oreal Miss Manga for example. If it weren’t for this stupid hinge it has halfway down the wand, it would be my favourite mascara. If only they would make a mini version…
Mini mascaras get through that awful "wet" phase faster.
You know when you open a mascara and it’s so wet it’s virtually dripping? Most mascaras get better after they’ve been open a few weeks and the formula dries up a little. I find mini mascaras get through that phase much faster.
Honestly, I wish more brands would sell mini-versions of their products so that little mascaras were more accessible. As it is, Sephora often has mascaras as 100-point perks, as well as selling those Sephora Favorites Lash Stash sets, which are pretty good value. You can also find them in Gifts With Purchase from brands like Clinique and Estee Lauder, or in subscription boxes like Birchbox.
