At under $8, Maybelline's new creamy mattes actually outperform many luxury brands.

When it comes to buying makeup, I'm a pretty equal opportunity girl. In my cosmetics bag, $2 eyeliners mingle with $50 concealer. However, sometimes you get what you pay for, and I've had my share of disappointment with wallet-friendly products.

For under $8, Maybelline's Color Sensational The Creamy Mattes lipsticks actually outperform many luxury brands. My pricier tubes are currently taking the backseat while I give these new shades some time to shine. Let me break down exactly why they're so great.

The Shades

I'll admit, a shade range with only eight colors seems a little limited, but within those eight tubes are some killer hues, from shockingly bright (Ravishing Rose and Faint for Fuchsia) to everyday neutrals (Touch Of Spice and Lust For Blush), this collection has something for everyone.

Plus, the pigments are really fantastic. One swipe is enough to give the lips a thorough coating of color, whereas two (blotted in between) provides completely opaque coverage.

The Texture

These are matte lipsticks, and they have a wonderfully velvet finish without a hint of shimmer or slickness--just how I like it. However, usually the mere mention of "matte" sends me into a spiral of fearing for my lips, picturing dry flakes starting to peek through 20 minutes after application.

In the past I've had so many matte lipsticks drag and pull against my lips upon application, ultimately leaving them feeling like the Sahara no matter how much balm I apply beforehand. And since it's winter, no one wants to make their lips worse than they're likely already feeling, so mattes seem to be out of the question.

Thankfully, the Creamy Mattes hold up to their name. They go on silky, and no matter how many times you press your lips together throughout the day they still feel soft. There's a slight dewiness when applied straight out the tube, but gently blotting with a tissue leaves you with dreamy matte lips.

The Wear

One frustrating worry about lipstick is whether it's going to hold up through eating, drinking, kissing and everything else you do with your mouth. Because the Creamy Mattes are formulated with oils to give them such a smooth application, they do have a bit of slip to them, so if you're planning on eating a gigantic burger while painting up with Craving Coral, you may want to touch up afterwards.

That said, the wear is quite strong. The pigments are deep, and blotting in between swipes guarantees color that will last for hours.
