I've been obsessed with finding truly purple shades of lipstick and lip gloss for about a year now. For whatever reason, a lot of products that look purple in the tube turn out way too pink on my lips, and it has taken me months--months!--to find a handful of shades that I feel look truly purple on me.
Of course, now that I've found these shades, it's pretty much summer, and there's a weird voice in the back of my mind that sounds like a snooty old aunt with a vaguely British accent (even though she's probably from Maine), and she's saying, "Purple?! Purple lipstick isn't appropriate for summer! Especially dark purple! If you want to inherit my collection of Judith Leiber clutches, you will not wear purple lipstick during the summer!"
Well, screw you, imaginary auntie! Here are five purple lip colors I'll be wearing this summer--and beyond--in order from boldest to sheerest.
Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Shameless
We were first introduced to this amazing color last fall when Alle reviewed the then-newly-launched Matte Balms. Notoriously difficult to find, Shameless is the most amazing, more-sophisticated-than-goth deep purple. The crayon-style application, minty scent, long wear, and surprisingly smooth formula make it worth going to 17 different drugstores to find it. Plus, every time I notice the name, I hear either Billy Joel or Garth Brooks singing "Shameless" in my head. To my imaginary aunt.
Kat Von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in L.U.V.
Holy long-lasting lip color, Batman! This stuff fought tooth and nail to stay on my mouth. But while it was on, here's what I noticed: it's a rich, deep, impossible-to-ignore shade of purple that's just as matte as the Revlon balm, but has a brighter vibe. This will definitely be one of my go-to bright lip colors for going out at night. It has the staying power to last through drinking, eating, talking, and, ideally, making out with my future boyfriend.
Color Secrets Professional Extreme Sheen Smoothing Lip Gloss in Fame
Under $4, this gloss is the least expensive product on this list, which is saying a lot considering I included three drugstore picks. I personally haven't seen Color Secrets Professional in drugstores yet--supposedly it's in some Walgreens--but their site is fully shop-able.
Extreme Sheen is the perfect combination of glossiness and pigment. You get lots of color and lots of shine. The only thing that's a bit strange is the slightly grandma-perfume scent, but it's not really noticeable unless you shove the doe-foot applicator up your nose. I pretty much love this gloss.
No, really, I do! See?
Milani Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss in Berry Tempting
Deceiving color name alert! When I picture a "berry" shade, I think of it as more of a magenta; this is definitely purple. But it's an understated one, perfect for if you want just a hint of purple and a lot of gloss.
CoverGirl Lipslicks Smoochies Sizzle Gloss in Violet Flare
If you're not really into noticeable lip color--or you have porphyrophobia (fear of purple)--virtually any of CoverGirl's Sizzle Glosses will do the trick. But even though it barely reads purple on the lips, Violet Flare adds the tiniest hint of color and shimmer that enhances lips' natural tone.
I usually prefer to wear an obvious lip color, but I am in love with the subtle effect.
Here are the swatches, which were hell to remove from my arm because of the Kat Von D practically-a-tattoo lip color.
Which one do you like best? Do you wear dark lipstick in the summer? Do you have porphyrophobia, and if so, how did you get through this article?
