A few months ago I got an invite to join my 10-year high school reunion page on Facebook. There must be some mistake, I thought to myself. I graduated in 2004 and it’s only…wait…IT’S BEEN 10 YEARS?!
So, yeah, I had mixed feelings about this high school reunion business. Initially I was pretty anti-reunion. I mean, with social media it’s easy to keep up with who you want to keep up with and Facebook stalk those you just want to be nosey about (don't act like you haven't done it).
As the reunion neared, I decided to go to at least one event--just to feel things out. Catching up with old friends led to looking through old pictures, which made me realize that a lot has changed as far as my beauty game goes.
Letting My Hair Down
With the exception of senior prom, I never wore my hair down in high school. I was self-conscious about my crazy curls so I kept them under wraps in low ponytails and weird frizzy bun things.
My freshman year of college I chopped my hair to about chin-length and started experimenting with different curly hair styling products. I learned to embrace my hair's texture and (eventually) really love everything about it--good and bad.
Bold Lipstick Fo' Life
I remember seeing other people rocking bold lip colors when I was in high school and thinking, There is no way I will ever wear lipstick--clear gloss fo’ life! I always thought lipstick would make my face look weird because I have such big lips. If you know anything about me by now, it’s that I am addicted to lipstick.
Eyebrows Are Important
I went through a time in my life when I thought I should have intensely thin eyebrows (it was a dark time). Looking back at photos, I wish I could burn all of the evidence. Shiny forehead + thin brows = not a good look for me.
I eventually realized the error of my ways and let these babies grow out. I now like to keep them reasonably full and filled in; they frame my face better and I like how they look with my glasses!
Now of course I had to make sure my makeup game was on point for the reunion. Here’s my favorite look from the weekend and a quick breakdown of what I used.
As per usual, I started out with my brows filled in and my foundation applied. For this look I used all Makeup Geek Shadows and prepped my eyes with the E.L.F. Eyelid Primer. I started by applying Crème Brulee to my entire lid (lash line to crease), Homecoming to just my mobile eyelid, and a mix of Burlesque and Bitten in the crease, being careful to blend everything well.
Next I did a nice thick wing with my Jordana Fabuliner Pen (find the step by step here) and coated my lashes with L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Black.
To finish everything off I used my favorite blush (Milani Baked Blush in Berry Amore) and applied a mix of MAC Lipstick in Flat Out Fabulous and Heroine to my lips.
Despite my initial hesitation, I ended up going to all but one reunion activity. I had a blast catching up with everyone and just reminiscing about old times! Despite the many beauty blunders I made in my time as a South High Titan, I’m thankful for the memories!
Anyone else have a school reunion coming up? What was your beauty situation like in high school? Pictures in the comments or it didn’t happen!
