I used to wear so much bright bright almost-neon blue eyeliner on my lower inner eyelids back in college that my snot was blue. True fact! It took me a while to figure out why. This was pre-Adderall (not mine, but anyone's), which I know has the same sweet effect on snot when crushed and snorted.
At that time (high school and early college -- yes, I walked around OBERLIN COLLEGE, now alma mater of Lena Dunham and whoever else, wearing cheesy 6-inch ankle-strap stilettos and extra-sticky shimmery pink lip gloss), I also took THREE hours to get ready every morning, between hair and make-up. I once missed an exam because I woke up with only 2 hours to get ready. I also once dove into a closet in my college dorm room because I didn't have mascara on when a guy walked into the room, and I stayed there for like 20 minutes until he left.
Cutting back on the amount of makeup I used was reeeeally hard, but I did it junior year of college. The reason I cut back was like the same reason a friend once told me he quit heroin -- he wanted to go to the beach with his friends, but didn’t have his supply to take with him, so he couldn’t go and realized he was missing things he loved because of his reliance on heroin. So he quit. In my case, I had enough times where I missed fun things because I wasn’t “ready,” so I titrated down slowly and eventually got to a manageable 30-minute daily routine.
Since then, I have been through many beauty phases, some super time-consuming and some taking exactly no minutes. My current one, when I don’t have anything fancy, consists of:
Vincent Longo concealer under my eyes and around my nose and on my chin
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Nude everywhere else
Lancôme Juicy Tubes lip gloss in Sheer Spring
And, as you know, if Genevieve does my make-up (when I do have something fancy), I leave it on for four days minimum, because it holds up and is that good.
I am so bleary-eyed (and shingles-y) from the days leading up to this launch, getting all this content together, working late nights with this amazing group (Marci, Annie, Emily, Corynne, Madeline, Olivia, Hannah and all the contributors, all of whom have their own very different beauty stories), that I can’t remember where I was going with that list of my favorite products or why I was confessing my unhygienic makeup preservation techniques. But there was a reason. And when I remember it, I will come back and tell you.
We hope you like the site, but more than that, we hope you tell us what you don’t like and what you do and anything else you want to tell us.
So get started now and tell me what you want to see here and what colors your snot has been.
P.S. This, like xoJane, is a judgement-free zone where "expert" means someone who's lived it.
