This stay-put formula laughs in the face of makeup remover.

I like to think I’m adventurous. I order menu items I can’t pronounce, I take the weird way home, and I wear clothing that doesn't "flatter my shape" (Garth Algar is my fashion icon, OK?). But where I really have a ball is trying new makeup.

I don’t have access to a Sephora, but there’s always eBay--glorious, weird eBay. I usually end up there late at night, sleep-deprived and ready to party. So many products are hit and miss, but if they can be had for under a few bucks? #YesPlease.

Anything under $1 is probably amazing, right?

Late one night I came across these lip creams, which were posted under all kinds of names but are labeled as M.N. Me Now Generation II Long Lasting Lip Gloss. All I know is the color selection and finish looked to be a hit, so I found a seemingly legit seller, plunked down my $8, and waited the requisite three to six weeks.

L to R: 33, 32, 06, 16, 18, 26, 14. (I don't have a lip swatch of shade 14 but you can see an arm swatch below. It didn't look so great with my natural lip color/wrinkles.)

I know there are a lot of long-lasting liquid-set lip products out there, and I’ve had spotty results with many of them. Either they flake off, have a sparkly finish, or just come in boring hues. Drugstore formulas run anywhere from $5-12, which, sorry, that’s too much. Even for space lipstick.

And let me be clear that I love the idea of space lipstick.

I got a range of colors from a nude pink to red. I loved how opaque they looked in the photos, and I was not disappointed IRL.

#16

16: A pale, grayish pink with undertones of purple. This was somehow my favorite.

The colors are very bold: it only took one swipe of the baby pink shade to cover my lip line with zero issues. The lip cream comes with a wand but I used a lip brush, as I think lip wands are just about the worst way to apply lip color.

#33

33: A deep ruby with a brown undertone, if you build it up.

The formula is not unlike latex paint. It dries and stays put. Forever. It laughed in the face of makeup remover, toner, and even oil. I eventually scrubbed it off with plain olive oil, but it took a while and more than a few remover wipes.

#32

32: Applied in a thin coat with my ring finger, this lasted like paint and looked like a stain.

I experimented with how much product I used--a thin swipe applied with my finger acted as a stain, lasting for six plus hours and a meal (with no reapplication). When applied in a thick coat with a brush, it tended to fleck off after a few hours, but I have hellacious wrinkle-lips, so your mileage may vary.

#26

26: Almost a nude, but just a punch more color.

#18

18: That mauve! Very drab, almost a gray tone. LOVE IT.

Overall I’m really pleased with the formula but the color selection is lacking. Still, it’s probably the best midnight eBay purchase I’ve made!

  • Do you buy cosmetics on eBay?
  • What’s the best/worst product you’ve bought?
  • What do you think of the over-drawn lip I did with #16? I kind of love it...
