Milani is one of my favorite drugstore brands, so when I heard they were coming out with a range of matte lipsticks, I was stoked to try them out. Milani was kind enough to send me the entire collection. Here’s what you need to know about the new mattes on the block.
All of these lipsticks are super pigmented, save for the lightest shade, which was still good but need a couple of extra passes to reach full opacity. I have a handful of the original formula lipsticks, and was glad to see that the gene for one-swipe full color had been passed along to this formula as well.
Although there are only eight lipsticks, shades range from nudes to classic reds to vibrant pinks, purple, and orange. I really love Maybelline Creamy Mattes, but one of the complaints I had about them was that there weren’t enough bold colors. Milani’s mattes are the answer to that.
Formula and wear varied from shade to shade, so I’m going to lay those out individually for you.
Matte Innocence was probably my least favorite as far as pigmentation, so I was surprised that it was my favorite in terms of formula. It's super creamy, but it dries to a definite matte finish. I didn't find this shade to be overly drying, either. It was pretty comfortable on the lips.
Matte Naked behaved and performed much like matte innocence, but was more pigmented with one swipe.
Matte Blissful was a bit chalky on the lips and was more dry than the first two formulas. I also found that it left a weird white residue on the inside of my lips.
The formula of Matte Diva reminded me a lot of the NYX Matte Lipsticks: super opaque but not heavy on the lips. This was slightly on the dry side, but not too shabby for a matte formula.
Matte Orchid felt the most like the Maybelline Creamy Mattes formula. It was smooth, easy to apply, and very pigmented. And it didn't feel very dry over time, which is a big plus.
I love a good purple lipstick, and Matte Glam is no exception. It feels (and looks) exactly like my beloved MAC Heroine--creamy and a bit on the thick side. This is drier, but not uncomfortably so.
Matte Passion is also similar in feel to MAC matte lipstick, but a little bit creamier. It's not quite as smooth as some of the other shades, but it doesn't feel uncomfortable to me.
Matte Confident is probably the driest of the bunch on application, but it seems to feel less dry over the day, which is weird. Despite being on the dry side, it glides on smoothly and easily.
One thing that was consistent across the board was the longevity of these lipsticks. Each seemed to stay on well even through meals and talking--and when they did fade, they did so evenly.
I was truly impressed by the overall performance of these lipsticks, but I do wish the formula was a bit more consistent across the board. Although some were a bit drier, I can't get over how gorgeous the shades are and how well they wore throughout the day. I'm glad to have them in my collection!
