It's easy to find decent lipstick in colors like red, pink, and even purple and orange. However, once you start to venture into weirder territory with colors like blue and black and yellow, it gets harder.
To save you from having to scramble last minute to find that one weird lipstick color that will complete your costume this Halloween, I made this handy list of my favorite out-there lipsticks.
If you don't have a costume idea yet, you may be able to get some inspiration from this list. Who says you can't base a Halloween costume off of your lipstick?
Best Gold: NYX Wicked Lippie in Mischievous
I wish gold lipstick was more of a thing because I love wearing it. This one from NYX is affordable and fairly opaque. I love the way it makes my lips look like they're coated in gold leaf.
This lipstick could make an interesting choice for a Cleopatra costume, or any glamorous costume.
Best Yellow: NYX Macaron Lippie in Citron
I guess you could use this lipstick for your sexy Minion costume. I don't know. I'm just saying, if you need a yellow lipstick this Halloween this is a really good option: it's affordable and it goes on surprisingly opaque. NYX is reliable like that.
Obviously, it's not a flattering color on me at all, but I wasn't expecting that from a yellow lipstick anyway.
Best Vampy Purple: Topshop Beauty Lips in Depth
I knew I had to choose one really dark, wine-colored lipstick for those of you going as vampires or witches or whatever. I've had this Topshop Beauty lipstick for ages, and it's long been a favorite. It's semi-glossy, smells delicious, and can be worn sheer or built up for lots of pigment.
Best Pink: Illamasqua Lipstick in Underworld
I was surprised to find that Illamasqua has a ton of interesting lipstick colors to choose from. Underworld is one of my three favorites, although I have to say it seems hilariously misnamed. It's a hot pink, but not just any hot pink. It has an iridescent sheen that's kind of hard to describe and photograph, but absolutely gorgeous in person.
I never wear this type of pink lipstick, but I love it in the tube, even if I don't wear it out much. If you're going as a Barbie or anything super-girly, this is the perfect choice.
Best Blue: Illamasqua Lipstick in Disciple
This is another one of Illamasqua's offbeat color offerings; the perfect dark blue lipstick. It's matte, so it can be a little drying, and I'll tell you right now it's not easy to apply it perfectly; it takes time, patience, and a steady hand. Perservere, however, and you'll have the most amazing blue lips.
Best Black: Illamasqua Lipstick in Pristine
What's a Halloween lipstick roundup without black lipstick?
I used to have a black lipstick from the Wet 'n' Wild Fergie collection but I have no idea what happened to it. Instead, I've replaced it with this one (although if your budget only allows for Wet 'n' Wild, I did just see an awesome Wet 'n' Wild Halloween collection in Target this week that has a black lipstick).
Pristine is a creamy but semi-matte black that is satisfyingly opaque. This lipstick has me thinking I can pull off wearing black lipstick all the time.
Best Iridescent Gloss: Sigma Lip Switch in Other-Worldly
So this is actually a lip gloss, not a lipstick. Pfft, semantics (although Sigma does offer a lot of great lipstick colors as well; Tamara covered some of them). Other-Worldly is a clear gloss with the prettiest iridescent finish you've ever seen. On its own, it'd be a great finishing touch for any magical, ethereal costume such as a fairy.
You can also layer it on top of other colors for a fun effect. Check out how it changed my look from Glinda the Good Witch to the Wicked Witch of the West in two seconds flat when I layered it on top of Pristine!
This oil slick effect is insane; I couldn't stop staring at my own lips. Of course it changes and fades throughout the night, so I'd suggest bringing the lip gloss with you for touch-ups.
