Like every other tween raised in the Avril era, I've suffered the fatigue of black eyeliner overload, and I shied away from lining my waterline for years.

Those days are over now, and I’m all about my waterline again. To avoid the hungover raccoon look (aka the Jenny Humphrey), I’ve been steering clear of black liner in favor of more interesting colors.

Black can look sexy and chic (I love smoky eyes, of course), but enhancing your waterline with other colors is a fun way to spice up otherwise mundane looks. Here are two of my favorite ways to line my waterline lately.

Going For Gold

Gold is my absolute favorite color. I love the way it makes brown eyes seem brighter. A bit of shimmery gold in the waterline can make eyes of any color seem wider and more awake.

I slathered my face in some CC Cream and blotted FACE Stockholm Crème Blush (in Paris) on my cheeks and lips for a cute flush.

I covered my mobile lid with Hazy, a shimmery, pinky neutral from Clinique’s All About Shadow 8-Pan Palette, and blended slightly up and into my crease.

Then, I gently gilded my lower waterline with Aerin Cool Gel Eyeliner in Gilt, a soft warm gold. (This excellent liner is currently sold out, so in its place, I recommend either Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Goldmine or Stila’s Smudge Stick in Gilded.)

Peep these golden eyes.

I swiped on just a bit of mascara and I was finished. The effect is subtle, but lovely and brightening for sure. It feels disco superfly.

Ultra Violet

Violet is one of my favorite fragrances, flavors, and flowers. The flowers, in particular, are so striking. I love the way the electric purple blends into the royal blue. Here’s an eye look inspired by violet.

Start by lining your entire eye with NYX Slide On Pencil in Purple Blaze. Use your finger to gently smudge the color a bit.

Purple reigns on my eyes.

Then, line your waterline with Maybelline Eye Studio Master Drama Cream Pencil in Sapphire Strength.

Blink a bunch of times to blend the two colors together. Pour some Crème de Violette in your Champagne and hit the town!

Real quick, here are some waterlining tips for sensitive eyes:

  1. Put eye drops in your eyes BEFORE starting the look. This will proactively calm any redness or irritation.
  2. Gently swipe a clean cotton swab along your waterline to dry it off before lining.
  3. Opt for soft, creamy pencils rather than hard, sharp ones to avoid painful mishaps.
