My obsession with makeup brushes has been well-documented on xoVain, but recently, a friend challenged me to do a full face of makeup with crayon-style products. I shrugged my shoulders and thought, Why not?
Let’s give it a whirl, shall we?
- All products must be in a crayon, pencil, or stick format
- I can have ONE non-stick item to complete the whole look (and I only got this little “cheat” through much groveling)
- NO brushes!
- NO CRYING! (OK, I made that up because I’m dramatic.)
I ran into my first hiccup immediately as I always start my makeup with Urban Decay Eye Primer Potion, and I have no stick format primers. Womp womp. I ended up just diving in with a long-wearing cream shadow stick and hoping for the best.
What I like about shadow formulas like this is that you don’t necessarily need a brush to blend it in. I ran it across my lids a couple of times and then blended it upwards to just above my crease using my pinky finger.
I typically go with pencil for my brows but I use a spoolie to brush them out too, so I switched it up and tried a crayon brow product.
This gives a more solid brow look than I would typically use, but I was able to blend any harsh spots with my pinky (which, after this challenge, I will now and forever call “old faithful”).
I decided to make things easy on myself and used that same crayon to line my upper lash line and to add a bit of dimension to the crease of my eyelids.
For foundation, I used the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation, which I've talked about before, because I could double it up as a concealer as well since it’s so full-coverage.
For lips, I used a bright pink lip liner to line and fill in my lips and then topped it with a glossy nude lip crayon.
I finished the look off by applying some Tyra Cheek in a Stick to my cheeks for a nice soft flush.
This challenge actually ended up being a little harder than I thought it would be. The final look is pretty subtle, and I was hoping to be able to do something unbelievably glam just using crayon-style products.
- Would this be a challenge for you, or do you already use your fingers for everything?
