Lipstick is more than makeup--it's a conversation starter.

Lipstick used to scare me. I thought it was impossible to apply smoothly and evenly--and I was certain that it would make me look like a clown.

Then, during a rehearsal for a classical vocal competition, the woman who was critiquing me said I looked "washed out" and needed to do something about it before my performance the next day. The thought of wearing lipstick crossed my mind, but I was stubborn and didn't have time to go shopping for lip color.

A week later, I received my judge's packet in the mail and--in addition to some solid critiques on my actual performance--I got a comment about needing more makeup. But it wasn't that I needed more makeup, it was that my lips were the same color as my face and it read poorly on stage. So I hit the lipstick aisles and started experimenting with every color I could find--deep pinks, bright pinks, corals, oranges, reds. Fast-forward to today and I'm a full-on lipstick addict. Even my lip balms are tinted!

I've received quite a few "What's that lip color?" comments on my previous xoVain blog posts, so I'm laying them all out here. These are the six lipsticks I'm currently using in heavy rotation.

LAQA & Co. Fat Lip Pencil in Bossy Boots

I wear this shade the most because it's one of my most subtle colors. It goes on a bit sheer, but it's buildable. The lighter color also makes for easy application sans mirror.

Revlon Balm Stain in Smitten

At $7, Revlon's balm stains are definitely a crowd favorite, and this bold pink is my second go-to for everyday wear. It's definitely bright, but it's not too in your face--and the formula is extremely long lasting and moisturizing, especially if you use a primer.

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in Electric Orange

Every lady needs a few orange lipsticks in her arsenal. I find myself reaching for this one often. It's definitely orange, but not, like, orange orange (as in, the fruit). The formula is really creamy and it stays put. Note: The color reads more pink on camera than it does in person.

NYX Matte Lipstick in Shocking Pink

This color intimidated me in a major way--but I've heard so many good things about it. (Unbeknownst to me, Tamara posted about it this morning!). I picked it up on a trance-walk into Ulta and waited a few days before trying it out. I'd just sort of look at it out of the corner of my eye and say, "Tomorrow." When tomorrow finally came, I fell in love. The shade is super flirty and impressively pigmented. It's not so matte, but it's also not super drying on the lips.

Rimmel London Show Off Lip Lacquer in Big Bang

When I want to stomp around town with an ultra red lip, I whip out this bad boy. It comes with a doe foot applicator and is super wet and juicy. A primer is absolutely necessary for this one since it's a thinner formula than your standard tube lipstick. That's OK, though, because that makes for some very glossy lips and a product that isn't drying. The color payoff is insane, too, especially for under $6. (This is what I wear onstage.)

Frankie Rose Lipstick in Cabernet

I discovered the Frankie Rose cosmetic line over a year ago and have continued to be impressed with their products, lipsticks included. Cabernet is so, so good. It's the deepest shade of vixen blue red and it's perfect for evenings when you want to feel sultry. I also love the formula. It packs some serious punch, even with one swipe, and lasts through the night. I consider Cabernet the quintessential "fall shade" and will probably start wearing much more in the coming months.

What are your everyday lip colors? Have you tried any of these?
