Did I feel warmer and fuzzier? That’s a hard feeling to pin down, exactly.

My toddler has a cold, it’s that time of the month, and I have five stories due by the end of the week. Let’s just say that I could be happier. And yet, despite a little sleep deprivation and the usual fatigue that goes along with my period, I’m feeling optimistic and ready to take on the day.

Where am I getting my energy? I just might be ready to attribute my upbeat attitude to Lotus Wei’s Pure Energy Flower Elixir. I’m trying the company’s collection of flower essences that promises, “For every mood and feeling, there is a flower. Choose a flower, and change your life.”

The idea behind the essences--which made Oprah Magazine’s O List and had a cameo on her Favorite Things show in 2012--is that we are constantly inhaling the healing properties of plants by simply breathing.

After all, oxygen is created by plants, trees and flowers. Founder of Lotus Wei Katie Hess believes that flower alchemy is another, perhaps more direct way, to receive the nourishing properties of plants because you’re taking in pure flower essences suspended in water. “Liquid energy that transforms your mood and your mind through your acupuncture meridians,” she writes on the Lotus Wei website.

The brand makes six mood-altering varieties of flower essences: Joy Juice, Infinite Love, Pure Energy, Inspired Action, Quiet Mind, and Inner Peace. Each comes in four formulas: an elixir that is taken orally, a serum that’s applied to pulse points, an energy mist, and a transformative perfume. I used each for the recommended two days (in order to feel “a dramatic difference” in your state of mind).

Here are the highlights of my floral alchemy experiment:

Pure Energy Elixir

Ingredients: Flower essences of Punica granatum (Pomegranate), Achillea millefolium (Yarrow), Trifolium pretense (Red Clover), Crassula ovata (Jade Succulent), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus), and gem essence of Black Tourmaline in pure water, grape alcohol, and ethically sourced raw desert wildflower honey

How I feel: Crampy, tired, slightly stressed. I am also fighting my son’s cold.

Promised effects: Magnifies radiance, vitality, and chi and strengthens your presence; boosts immune system and balances reproductive system; protects you from others’ stress and re-energizes you after computer, cell phone, and air travel fatigue.

My experience: After a night of my toddler’s heartbreaking coughs, I took the Pure Energy elixir under my tongue and added a few drops to my water bottle. Luckily it tastes sweet--honey is the first ingredient, followed by essences of pomegranate, jade flower, red clover, yarrow, and pink lotus.

Within hours, I felt more confident, happier and energized. I managed to fit in a quick workout, do some laundry, AND tidy the house by the end of the day!

Inspired Action Serum

Ingredients: Carthamus tinctorius (Safflower Oil), vitamin E (from GMO-free Soybeans), essential oils of Citrus aurantifolia (Lime), Elettaria cardamomum (Cardamom), Citrus Limon (Lemon), Schinus molle (Pink Pepper), Pimenta racemosa (Bay Rum), Pimenta dioica (Allspice), and hand-collected flower essences of Epidendrum radicans (Fire Star Orchid), Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Red Bird of Paradise), Kalanchoe tubiflora (Chandelier Succulent), Euphrasia nemorosa (Euphrasia), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus), and gem essence of Fluorite

How I feel: Happy and more interested in cuddling with my little one than getting out of bed.

Promised effects: Magnifies fearless creativity, innovation, inspiration, and thinking outside the box. Increases motivation, productivity, drive, and the ability to complete unfinished projects; enhances decisiveness and trusting your intuition.

My experience: Massaging the serum onto my wrists, earlobes and back of neck was an uplifting experience in itself but I did feel immediately perkier.

When I sat down to do some writing, it seemed easier than usual. I checked Facebook much less often than I’m wont to do while waiting for something to save or load. Of course, I was already in a pretty good mood to begin with, but even with gorgeous weather outside, I didn’t feel bitter about having to sit in front of a computer.

Joy Juice Serum

Ingredients: Carthamus tinctorius (Safflower Oil), vitamin E (from GMO-free Soybeans), essential oils of Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange), Citrus sinensis (Blood Orange), Artemisia pallens (Davana), Aniba rosaeodora (Rosewood), Tagetes minuta (Tagetes), Citrus aurantifolia (Lime),and hand-collected flower essences of Spiraea tomentosa (Pink Spirea), Lotus corniculatus (Birdsfoot Lotus), Berlandiera lyrata (Chocolate Flower), Osteospermum ecklonis (African Daisy), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus), and gem essence of Red Garnet

How I feel: A bit groggy

Promised effects: Magnifies joy, happiness, freedom, and letting your inner child play. Deepens your enjoyment of everyday experiences and simplifies life. An instant cheerful boost that clarifies your path and dissolves worry and complication, so you can experience more freedom and fun.

My experience: I took more time for myself than usual during my Joy Juice weekend. Not only did our family have fun outings to the park to meet friends but I read a book instead of doing writing or work around the house during my son’s nap. Can flower alchemy affect one’s decision-making? Maybe!

Infinite Love Energy Mist

Ingredients: Essential oils of Citrus deliciosa (Red Mandarin), Pelargonium roseum (Rose Geranium), Monarda fistulosa (Monarda), Cymbopogon citrates (Lemongrass), Rosa damascena (Rose absolute), Rosa damascena (Rose Wax), and Apies millifera (Beeswax Absolute), and hand-collected flower essences of Bauhinia blakeana (Hong Kong Orchid), Epilobium augustifolium (Fireweed), Magnolia liliflora (Pink Magnolia), Hieracium aurantiacum (Hawkweed), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus) and gem essence of Pink Tourmaline in pure water

How I feel: What I actually need is infinite patience to survive my son’s refusal to fall asleep for naps or at night.

Promised effects: Magnifies self-love and appreciation; makes you feel beautiful and attracts love. Helps you to be kind to yourself; helps you feel beautiful and take time to take breaks; enhances charisma and magnetism; dissolves heartbreak and softens hardening of the heart; attracts love and opportunity.

My experience: I love the scent of Infinite Love and think that it would be worth buying the perfume even if it didn’t make me feel lovey-dovier. I made an effort to do some yoga stretching each morning to not only help me feel happier but to hopefully help me be a little more patient.

Did I feel warmer and fuzzier? I’m not really sure. That’s a hard feeling to pin down, exactly. I don’t expect an overwhelming sense of wellbeing or love with anything that’s not a drug and I think that’s most abstract with this particular essence.

Quiet Mind Energy Mist

Ingredients: Essential oils of Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium), Coriandrum sativum (Coriander), Eugenia caryophyllata (Clove), *Citrus deliciosa (Mandarin), Citrus limon (Lemon) and hand-collected flower essences of Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise), Passiflora incarnata (Passionflower), Brugmansia arborea (Datura), Taraxacum officinale (Dandelion), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus), and gem essence of Kyanite in pure water

How I feel: Tired and anxious. I have a lot of work to do and not much time. I’m also going to try Quiet Mind out on my sleep-averse son.

Promised effects: Magnifies feeling more connected, quiets the mind and enhances clarity and awareness. Dissolves tension and helps you experience deep rest and sound sleep; be in your perfect zone and zen; enhances efficiency, clarity, and effectiveness.

My experience: I felt more focused then I expected when I sat down to work—of course my cleaning lady was taking care of the house duties and baby was out of the house for the day.

Experiments with Quiet Mind (Lotus Wei essences can be used on children older than one year) on my son seem to shorten the length of time it takes him to fall asleep at night and by night three had him sleeping through the night…but could totally be a coincidence. Children’s sleep is unpredictable, to say the least.

Inner Peace Perfume

Ingredients: Certified Organic Vitus vinifera (Grape Alcohol), essential oils of Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender), Coriandrum sativum (Coriander), Juniperus communis (Juniper), Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium), Pimenta dioica (Allspice), and Vetiveria zizanioides (Vetiver) and hand-collected flower essences of Lupinus arcticus (Arctic Lupine), Chorisia speciosa (Silk Floss), Sophora secundiflora (Mountain Laurel), Hibiscus rosasinensis (Hibiscus), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus) and gem essence of Emerald

How I feel: Inspired to start some spring cleaning. Translation: randomly and manically opening drawers and "organizing."

Promised effects: Enhances your ability to fully express yourself and let it all hang out; feeling comfortable and confident in every situation; offers fresh perspectives after long periods of stress; calms and stabilizes during times of change and transition.

My experience: I gave up on my spring cleaning and felt a little calmer after using Inner Peace but I may just have worn myself out. Inner Peace makes an earthy perfume. Don’t expect it to last like a luxury eau de toilette or parfum, though. This all-natural formula doesn’t have the same staying power.

Conclusion: It’s hard to know for sure if I just wanted Lotus Wei’s flower essences to work or if they actually enhanced my mood.

Of all the essences, I felt like Joy Juice and Pure Energy had the most dramatic effects, and I preferred the elixir version to any of the other formulas. There’s just something about actually consuming the essence that makes me think it’s going to work better.

Will I continue to experiment with flower alchemy? Despite a little cynicism, Pure Energy drew me out of an over-tired, menstrual funk, and Quiet Mind may have helped my kid sleep. But what do you think? Would you give it a try?
