Whoever Said You Shouldn't Wear Bright Makeup In The Winter Was Probably A Jerk

Just because it's cold out doesn't mean you have to wear only dark red lipsticks and nail polishes.

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself getting into a color rut in the winter. My clothes are all black and beige, and it seems like as soon as there’s a chill in the air, I’m unable to come up with anything more original than cranberry-colored nails and lips.

This winter, I’m determined to be a little more creative with my makeup--and a little more colorful. I loved wearing hot pink and bright purple lipstick last summer while I was a blonde. Just because it’s January and I’m now a brunette again doesn’t mean I have to stick to dark reds.

So I tried a few different colorful makeup looks outside on the coldest morning we’ve had so far. I would have done more but my fingers started to become completely numb. Whoops!

Let’s start with pink! I have a wide variety of pink lipsticks.

These are my favorite pink lipsticks.

These are my favorites.

From left to right in the photo above:

Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Lipstick in #90, Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss in Adored, an incredibly bright neon pink by Wet ‘n’ Wild called Dollhouse Pink, and a bright but sheer Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Sweet Tart.

From the bottom up, it’s #90, Adored, Dollhouse Pink, and Sweet Tart.

I like to pair hot pink lips with black winged eyeliner.

And leopard print, naturally. This is the Rimmel #90.

The Rimmel pink, above, is a great pink lipstick with just enough shine and color to really pack a punch.

The Revlon lip gloss in Adored, below, is my new favorite purchase. It’s an incredible Barbie pink. I had no idea a lip gloss could be this highly pigmented.

I accidentally paired Adored with the blue eyeliner that I’m going to mention later. Now that is colorful.

I use the Sweet Tart Lip Butter as a cream blush a lot. (My cheeks are very pink in most of these photos from a combination of Sweet Tart and very cold air.)

This next color won’t be for everyone but I think it’s fun: Dollhouse Pink.

Sorry for the wonky lighting in some of these pictures; my hair color isn’t orange in real life.

With a color like this, you just have to own it. It’s truly neon. Not for the faint of heart.

I WILL wear neon pink lipstick in the winter and nobody can stop me.

Moving on to the next color, I also have a ton of orange lipsticks.

From left to right in the photo above: a vibrant reddish-orange by Wet ‘n’ Wild called Purty Persimmon, another Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in #109, Revlon Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti, and Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Rendezvous.

Purty Persimmon is matte, long-lasting, and very bright--and only around $2! I love it.

Tutti Frutti is a much brighter and slightly more sheer. I also sometimes use a little bit of it as a cream blush when I’m wearing coral or orange lipstick.

I also recently bought a Revlon Baby Stick for Lips and Cheeks in Sunset, which is a pretty orangey color in the tube, but I’m not totally sold on it yet.

It looks so bright and colorful in the tube.

I’m not sure exactly what to do with it because it’s too sheer to really show up on my lips, and although it gives a nice subtle coral glow to my cheeks, it doesn’t really work on top of makeup and is too sheer to show up under makeup. Frustrating!

I took a large chunk and blended some of it into my arm to show you how sheer it is.

I suppose I could wear it without makeup, but unfortunately my scarred cheeks are my biggest skin problem right now. My plan for now is to try wearing it alone with just a bit of concealer as needed.

I have one bright purple: Maybelline ColorSensational Vivid in Brazen Berry.

I love it--it’s such a bright color and makes me want to buy more from that line. Just be warned that it smells very strongly of Play-Doh for some reason.

I like wearing purple lipstick with some pink blush.

I think purple lips go great with blue and green eyes.

This is kind of a pinkish purple. I put it next to Wet ‘n’ Wild’s Dollhouse Pink for comparison.

I also have a bright blue eyeliner that I bought from Topshop (I talked about it in this article).

I think it looks great with a nude lip and just a bit of pink blush (which you may not even need if the cold air does it for you).

Thanks for the free blush, nature!

Finally, I was really excited to try this Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Invite Only because the unusual baby blue color looked so bright and vivid. I can’t tell you how annoyed I was when I got home and tried it only to realize that it was completely sheer and shimmery.

I’ve come to expect great color payoff from the Revlon Lip Butter line, so I felt a little tricked. That should teach me to always check reviews on my phone first before buying anything so I know what I’m getting. So, sadly, no bright blue lips this time. I gave it to my teenage sister, for whom the sheer shimmer is completely suitable.

I also get into a nail polish rut in the winter, relying solely on four colors: black, nude, classic red, and dark burgundy. Dozens of colorful nail polishes just sit around until summer comes back.

Including these guys, and I JUST bought them.

That is a travesty, so I’m making an attempt to wear more pretty jewel tones on my nails as well.

I’m wearing Sinful Colors Professional in Happy Ending and NYC In A New York Minute Quick Dry in Proud Peacock.

They’re both such gorgeous colors and deserve to be worn in the winter--think about how they’ll pop against all the black you wear (if you’re anything like me).

I just got a gorgeous black coat in the mail from Zara and I’m probably going to dye my hair darker soon, so I’m excited to play around some more with bright colors on my face and nails. I think it’ll make a great contrast, and hopefully keep me from getting too bored this winter.

You can’t be bored when wearing orange lipstick.

What about you? Do you feel weird wearing hot pink lipstick in December?
