There are so many things I’m excited for now that the weather is getting nicer here in Toronto: road trips to local farms, camping in new spots, vegan ice cream-making adventures… the list goes on and on.
Above all things though, I’m excited to get to work on my garden!
Gardening isn’t something that comes naturally to me at all; in fact, I’ve killed a lot of innocent plants in my rooftop gardening efforts in the past. My mom was never much of a gardener, and although my great-grandma showed me a few tips and tricks when I was little, I didn’t retain much knowledge from that time except that I thought snails were cute and she wanted to kill them.
Over the past few years, I’ve been trying my best to grow a tiny harvest in pots crammed onto whatever outdoor space I've had, and sometimes I actually managed to get some pretty great results, but this year I’m taking things to a whole new level: I have my own yard!
Having a yard with actual soil in the actual ground changes everything, and I am already brimming with ideas for patio furniture, delicious BBQ recipes, and all the veggies and fruits I’m going to grow. With all this gardening inspiration floating around my life (soil and seeds are on my mind literally all the time), the obsession has started bleeding into just about everything else too. I find myself constantly thinking about my garden decor, cute DIY signs, homemade weed killer, and beauty.
OK, I know, there isn’t too much in the way of makeup looks for the garden other than waterproof mascara, lip balm, and sunscreen, but there are plenty of lovely indoor products that remind me of all the wonders of working in the garden, and I really appreciate having them around while I’m waiting for some nice weather to arrive.
Here are some products so sweet and fresh, it’s like they’ve popped out of the soil in my vegetable garden.
MCMC Garden Perfume Oil
I adore all of MCMC’s scents, but this earthy floral number is particularly appealing to me while I wait for spring to really start blooming outside. With heavy notes of red thyme, lavender, myrtle and bitter orange, this perfume is blended with organic jojoba, coconut, and grape seed oil, and smells incredibly fresh, like a handful of herbs just plucked from the soil.
Lollia Relax Handcreme
Whenever I use this hand cream, I find myself sniffing my hands all day like they’ve somehow transformed into a bouquet of flowers.
A delicate blend of lavender, violet, vanilla, amber, white orchids and a shea butter base with macadamia nut oils, this hand cream is extremely decadent and rich. It’s perfect for treating callused hands after a long day turning the soil.
Library of Flowers Honeycomb Shower Gel
Every gardener needs some good soap to get all that dirt off, and Library of Flowers' products are the perfect way to bring the garden inside and help you get clean. All of the packaging is beautifully laden with botanical prints, and the scents are intoxicatingly fresh.
Honeycomb Shower Gel smells like sunshine, sugar, honey, and just a hint of spring blossoms. With shea butter, bee balm and jojoba oil, this gel will leave your post gardening skin as soft as a flower petal.
One Love Organics Rose Daily Body Serum
After an afternoon weeding your veggie patch with the hot sun beaming down on you, there’s nothing better than a cool shower and a thick coating of moisturizer. Conveniently packaged in a spray bottle for easy application, One Love Organics Rose Body Serum is a soothing blend of lightweight pumpkin seed oil, sea buckthorn oil, and decadent natural rose fragrance. It’s the perfect product to cover your body with after a relaxing shower before bed.
Love Fresh Pear Body Butter
If your poor skin is so parched from sun and soil exposure that you need more than a serum, Love Fresh’s insanely rich body butter is here to help. An intensely hydrating blend of oils, aloe vera, white willow bark, calendula extracts and chamomile, this is the thickest body butter I’ve ever seen, and it feels so good on dry skin.
The delightful pear scent smells market-fresh and ever so slightly floral, like a fruit stand loaded with ripe pears in the summer sun.
I’m a big fan of pretty much all fancy candles, and even though I have products from a ton of super expensive, incredible brands, I must say I’ve never been more impressed than I am by Produce Candles. Lovingly hand-poured with soy wax and cotton wicks into mason jars in the Southeast, Produce aims to bring the best of the farm stand into the home, and my my, do they ever deliver!
With a range of candles like Kale, Radish and Peanut, plus a limited batch of seasonal scents based on timely crops (right now Rhubarb is on the menu), these candles are adorable to look at, super-affordable, and they smell SO good. Honestly, I was shocked by how intense my melon and wildflower candles turned out to be. If you don’t have much of a green thumb, or you’re stuck in a home with no outdoor space, these little $24 jars are the perfect way to bring the veggie patch inside.
