Old school holiday beauty inspired by my fabulous "glammothers."

When I’m getting ready for all those fancy holiday cocktail parties I’m always getting invited to, I think: grandma. Just kidding. I am never invited to fancy holiday cocktail parties. But when something does turn up that requires a little more beauty effort, YES, I do turn to my glam grandmas (glammas?) for inspiration.

My grandmas are THE BEST. Grandma Mely is a wordsmith with a quick wit and the kindest soul on the planet. Religious yet nonjudgmental, she is our household’s reigning Jeopardy champion, and she enjoys cryptograms in a way I didn’t think was humanly possible. Grandma Tess is a playful and loving chatterbox, with a sense of humor that keeps me on my toes. Independent and ferociously strong-willed, she found love again in her 70s, proving, in her own words, that she's "still got it."

One thing my two grandmas have in common is that they both exude old school Hollywood glamor, and I've got the pictures to prove it.

So, this glamorous holiday look I came up with is a combination of both my beautiful Lolas (that's "grandmas" in Filipino).

makeup products

Naked Basics Palette, MAC Lip Pencil in Brick, Ben Nye Luxury Powder in Banana, Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Buck, YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation.

I started with my favorite hot rollers.

I used YSL’s Touche Teint Eclat foundation because it’s my most glamorous bottle of foundation.

simple eyes

I kept the eyes very neutral, using only the lightest of browns.

I swept Naked2 from the Naked Basics Palette all over my lid to the crease, then lightly dusted the crease and outer edges of my eye with Faint. I also applied Faint to my lower lash line. I then added the thinnest line of liquid liner on my upper lids using Inglot’s Felt Tip Liner.

I topped my eyes off with a pair of Ardell Lashes.

For brows, I also used the Naked Basics Palette, mixing in Faint with Crave and using an angled brush to fill in the gaps.

Then I used Urban Decay’s Buck, my favorite contouring product ever, under my cheekbones.

On my lips, I used MAC's Lip Pencil in Brick, followed by some lip balm.

For a matte finish, I dusted everything with Ben Nye’s Luxury Powder in Banana. I particularly like this powder under the eyes as it neutralizes the blueish-violet tones of my typical bag city under-eyes.

Final look 1

For an even bigger hair look, I made a huge hair rat using all the hair from my grandma's brush--from 1963 until now--and combed my hair back and pinned it.

Much volume, plenty surprise.

Like grandma, like granddaughter.

  • Did I do a decent job at channeling my old school grams?
  • What has your grandma taught you about hair and makeup and looking glam at all times?
  • Post pictures of your grandmas! I want to see them ALL.
