Back in high school, I was so excited when my friend Heather got her first car: A white Mustang with a plush burgundy interior. Swoon!
I was reluctantly yet gratefully borrowing my mother’s Lincoln Town Car at the time (cue “Ridin’ Dirty”), so you can imagine how badass a Mustang seemed to 17-year-old me.
One of the main reasons I was so taken with Heather’s ride was because it was a convertible. I’d had pretty much zero convertible experience, save for imagining myself as Liv Tyler in Aerosmith’s “Crazy” video.
When I finally got the chance to be Heather’s passenger, I learned something very quickly: riding with the top down makes your hair whip around in a very annoying, not-as-sexy-as-Liv-and-Alicia-made-it-look way. Your hair will stick to your face whether or not you’re wearing lip gloss, and you will find yourself praying that the driver can see through her hair better than you can.
Something else I learned that day: post-convertible-ride hair rules! When we arrived at our destination, I found myself surmounted with super-sultry, voluminous hair. Thanks, wind!
I’ve had about as much convertible experience since high school as I did before it, but I still love that wind-blown look, which is why I was excited to see that Redken is launching a product called, well, Wind Blown.
It’s a hairspray and dry shampoo hybrid that promises to “create an airy effect with tousled body and a soft matte finish.” Basically, a convertible ride in a can.
I’ve been stretching out a blowout for six days, so I thought this would be the perfect time to try Wind Blown. While my hair still looks presentable, it’s pretty limp, and the increasing oiliness is weighing it down.
I shook the can, turned my head upside-down and gave it a good all-over misting. I almost overdid it because it smells amazing--like a tuberose and gardenia dream--and I wanted it to go on and on.
Upon flipping my head over, I was greeted in the mirror by fluffy, full, sexy hair that looked perfectly wind-whipped.
Because it’s part dry-shampoo, it helped zap the greasiness that was weighing it down, and because it’s part hairspray, this tousled volume will go on and on. So while I don’t have access to a convertible, I do have access to that “Yeah, my boyfriend has a convertible” look.
Redken Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray will be available in salons starting next week. Think you’ll give it a try?
