I've been meaning to break out my hair chalk for a while now. My small collection has sat in a storage cabinet with other neglected hair products, calling out to me as they catch the light every time I open the door. So many times I've pulled out something else and gently whispered, "Your time is coming."
OK, I don't actually whisper to my hair products, but you get the point.
A holiday weekend seems like a good a time to put these L'Oreal Professionnel Hairchalks to use. They're liquid chalks and they last for between 2 to 10 washes. I decided to use them to create a patriotic braid that's easy to do but makes a big impact. Double win!
Step 1: Prep Your Hair
I added some large curls throughout my hair to give it texture and body. You can add smaller curls, straighten your hair, or just brush it out. Your choice.
Step 2: Separate Front Section
Isolate a front section of your hair. There should be enough hair to create a three-strand braid.
Step 3: Divide Into Three
Divide your isolated section into three separate parts. I used bobby pins to keep the pieces separated.
Step 4: Add Color
Apply red chalk to one strand and blue chalk to another. If you have white chalk you can go ahead and do the third strand white. I think it looks OK without the white, though. The two colors I'm using are Blue Ocean Cruise and Coral Sunset. Let the color air-dry, or blow-dry to speed up the process.
Step 5: Braid
Create a simple three-strand braid and secure with a clear elastic band.
Step 6: Drape and Pin
Finally, drape your braid to the back of your head and secure with two criss-crossed bobby pins. When you do this, push the rest of your hair aside and secure the braid as close to your scalp as possible. Your hair will fall into place and conceal the pins.
What do you think? Festive enough for a Labor Day barbecue? What makeup would you pair with it?
Have a happy and safe holiday!
