This will be the first Valentine’s Day in a while that I'll be alone, but I'm still all for celebrating love.
That said, I’m definitely not into classic Valentine’s traditions. I loathe the color red, and don’t even get me started on long-stemmed red roses.
Though a bouquet of pretty blooms from a local florist will definitely do the trick, there are a few slightly more unexpected options out there.
One of my favorite unexpected scented items is my Shu Uemura Petal Lash Mascara, a volumizing formula that gives me the dreamiest doll eyes and smells like roses. Anna Sui’s entire line is also similarly flower-scented--it really makes applying makeup every morning a more enjoyable experience.
There’s a section in Miranda July’s new novel where she writes that candles are the worst gift ever. The nerve! Candles are my favorite. Seriously, when is the last time you thought to yourself, Oh man, I totally have too many beautiful candles?
My recommendation for this Valentine’s Day is a floral candle with an edgy twist, such as Red Sky By Kerry Lee’s Cannabis Rose. Handmade here in Toronto with soy wax, Kerry’s creations are all delicious, but there’s something about the Cannabis Rose combo that's truly addictive.
Laundry Soap And Lingerie
Of course, plain old laundry soap would send the wrong message, but I think a nice bottle of flower-scented detergent alongside a gorgeous lingerie ensemble (check out anything by Fortnight) is a delightful gift. It's all about everyday indulgences and simple pleasures. The Laundress’ delicate detergent (with a scent dubbed "Lady") is the perfect product to keep your underthings silky and clean. With a feminine blend of amber, bergamot, lavender, and musk, it's the kind of thing you’ll want to rub all over your body instead of pouring it into the wash basin.
NCLA’s Nail Wraps make the gift of nail art fun and simple. My flowery picks are Hot Mama, a classic pink rose print, and Aly en Vogue, an edgy, geometric take on a peachy floral wallpaper.
Bath Bombs And Bubble Bars
If you don’t “get” bubble baths then we probably can’t be friends. I live for bath time, and nothing takes that time to the next level like Lush’s fun, fizzy bath products. Though there are a ton of floral options, my two favorites are the Rose Jam Bubbleroon and the Rose Queen Bath Bomb. Split them into pieces and use them separately, or drop them both into a single bath for rosy, bubbly goodness beyond your wildest dreams.
Forget flowers on the table--put some flowers in your hair. Any semi-trendy florist will know how to whip up a flower crown befitting a forest nymph, or if you’d rather invest in something that will last, there are endless gorgeous options available online. My current favorite flower crown craftswoman is Rochelle of Summer Blossom, a small Australian company that makes the most whimsical and enchanting crowns using delicate silk flowers.
