Fresh-baked bread, a crackling campfire, or grandma's old school perfume--for each of us, there are certain scents that evoke a feeling of comfort.
Me? I can't walk into a store burning Nag Champa incense without wanting to throw on a gigantic sweater, curl up in the fetal position, and nap, preferably during a rainstorm.
Yeah, I suppose Nag Champa turns me into a housecat.
Being so in love with the scent, I want to smell it in my home AND on my person. For those of you who have a similar love affair with Nag Champa, I've culled together a few incense-like finds, from subtly smoky to full-on eau de head shop. Enjoy, my incense loving friends.
Bella Freud 1970 Candle
Bella has enough cool girl cred to get me to buy anything, what with her childhood spent in Morocco, her cheeky sweater collection, and her killer family tree (daughter of brilliant painter Lucian Freud, great granddaughter of Sigmund). Then she goes and releases the loveliest collection of luxury candles, housed in chic matte black jars. What a dream woman.
This candle is inspired by memories of Bella's childhood--and the thick incense smoke that frequently permeated the air--in the year 1970. Its notes of patchouli, frankincense, myrrh, and musk run the risk of smelling hippy-dippy, but the overall effect is luxe, welcoming, and warm. If I could marry a candle, this would be the one.
I Heart Unicorns Perfume, A Beautiful Life
Inspired by teenage bedrooms of days gone by, A Beautiful Life opens with frothy notes of lemon and pomegranate and settles down into a base of frankincense. Imagine putting on a Heart record and lighting up a stick of Nag Champa before laying back on shag carpeting with a pack of Sweet Tarts and a handful of Pixi Stix. Boom, that's this perfume.
Le Compagnie de Provence, Incense Lavender EDT
If you're craving a fragrance that has incense in the mix but isn't as sweet as I Heart Unicorns, I highly recommend Incense Lavender. It's a beautiful unisex scent with a heart of sandalwood and pure, dreamy lavender--and it smells absolutely fantastic on the skin. Plus, it's available in a candle, lotion, hand soap, and more.
Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa Beauty Soap
Moving onward to the end of your day, perhaps you decide to take a bath. I don't think the incense love necessarily has to stop once you hop in the tub. Clearly the popular Satya Sai Baba company had the same vision in mind when they included incense-scented soaps in their vast Nag Champa line. Lather up with the Nag Champa Beauty Soap, or toss it in your drawers to keep your T-shirts and underwear smelling softly of the classic.
