Buying my Clarisonic Aria was one of the best beauty decisions I’ve ever made, but that sure as hell doesn’t mean I was excited to drop $200 on it. Even worse, three months later I realized the brush was absolutely repulsive, thanks to a buildup of oil, dirt, and makeup.
Wait, I thought. Do I have to replace this thing?! Cue an open-mouthed Google search. Replacement heads cost $27 every three months? If I have this thing in five years--and I’m sure I will--I’ll have spent $540 on brush heads alone. Nope. I simply refuse. Which is why I cooked up an insanely cheap, easy brush head cleanser using three ingredients you already have at home. I’ve found it can stretch my brush head’s life to six months--even eight if I’m lucky.
What You’ll Need:
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen peroxide
- A lemon
- A small bowl to mix everything in
In the bowl, mix the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide until you have a paste that’s about the consistency of yogurt.
Squeeze two or three slices of lemon into the paste--you should see a lot of fizzing.
Dip your brush head into the mixture and turn it on. Let it spin in the mixture for about a minute.
Continue spinning the mixture-soaked brush head on a rougher surface, like a washcloth or the back of your hand, for another minute or two. While the brush is still spinning, rinse the head with water.
Repeat until your brush head is satisfactorily clean.
Wash the head with your facial cleanser once before you use it on your face, just to make sure all remnants of the cleansing paste are gone.
OPTIONAL: This mixture also works perfectly for cleaning the reserve behind your brush head.
Crazy-easy, right?! Now talk back to me.
